Barberini saves best until last with €95K Kendargent colt

The final lot in the ring attracted plenty of interest and Newmarket-based agent Federico Barberini had to go to €95,000 to secure the second foal out of the Australian-bred Listed-placed HUNTER FORWARD. The son of Kendargent was consigned by Haras d'Omméel on behalf of breeder Michael Watt and boasts a solid Australian pedigree fearuting the Group winners DANROAD and STRAWBERRY BOY.

I thought he was a gorgeous horse by one of the best stallions in France, commented the Italian-born agent. He is for an existing client and will stay in France to be trained.

LOT 517
Richner shells out €80,000 for Nathaniel colt

Agent Chris Richner has a solid track record of sources horses at ARQANA who go on to winning the best races in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary or Polan before venturing into proper Stakes company in France and Germany at four and above - a pattern illustrated by the likes of SUBWAY DANCER, CACCINI, TRIP TO RHODOS, MY OLD HUSBAND etc.

The ARQANA representative in Eastern Europe will be hoping for a repeat scenario with a son of Nathaniel for which he forked out €80,000. Offered by Charles Brière's Fairway Consignment, the chesnut is a half-brother to six winners including the Listed performer FACE SURFACE, and the second dam LADY VETTORI produced the likes of LOPE DE VEGA and LADY FRANKEL.

I have bought him on behalf of Mr. Odchazel, who has been a client of mine for over ten years, said Richner. He is amongst the biggest owners in the Czech Republic and buys at ARQANA every year. I am a big fan of Nathaniel and this horse is a lovely individual, but we had to stretch our budget to its top end!

LOT 512
More six-figure glory for Dabirsim

The progeny of leading first season sire Dabirsim continued to generate fireworks in the sales ring and it was one of his daughters who commanded the highest price of the day at €105,000. The bay was offered by Mathieu Daguzan-Garros's Haras des Granges, which bred the filly in association with Frederic Bragato. Mocklershill's Willie Browne had the final word and signed the docket on behalf of George Mullins.

I am keen on the sire but above all, the filly appealed to me, the pinhooker explained. She is very correct individual with a lovely walk and a nice head.

LOT 499
€90K Pedro The Great colt concludes fairytale for breeder Alain Clavier

Alain Clavier will remember the date October 19. This small breeder from the West of France led around the ring what became the third-highest priced yearling of the day, a son of Pedro The Great who was knocked down to Jean-Claude Rouget for €90,000. The Pau-based handler already trains Pedro The Great's leading offspring FERALIA, who won the L. Criterium du Becquet.

Clavier started as a breeder in the showjumping business, notably producing GALET D'AUZAY, who was vice European champion under the saddle of Michel Robert in the early 2000s. At about the same time, Clavier and his wife Myriam started to branch out in the thoroughbred industry, initially buying a mare by the name of Double Melody. They sent her to Sagamix as a result of a free nomination they had won at the annual ASSELCO gala (the breeders' association in France's western region). The resulting filly, named Double Mix, failed to sell as a yearling and was leased to trainer Gerard Collet before being claimed and pursuing a long and productive career, winning six races under French and ultimately Spanish ownership.

Ten years after foaling her down, the Clavier couple saw the name of Double Mix pop up in a sales catalogue again. It was at the 2014 February Mixed Sale at Deauville and Mrs. Clavier insisted that her husband bought her back to breed from her. They did so for €7,000, in partnership with their neighbour Roger-Yves Simon of Haras du Saz, and a very emotional Mr. Clavier tells the rest of the story.

Again we won a nomination at the ASSELCO raffle, to Pedro The Great who is a sire we wouldn't necessarily have used. This colt has always been so straightforward and as we have only a couple of yearlings every year, he was the apple of our eyes since the beginning! It is a great achievement for small breeders like us to sell a yearling at that price and to go to such a successful stable.

Evasive filly breaks 6 figure barrier

A filly by Evasive from the draft of Haras des Capucines broke the six-figure mark as evening fell upon Deauville. Lyon-based trainer had the final word at €115,000 on behalf of up-and-coming owner Fabrice Petit, adding to their four purchases on the opening day. Their shopping list as day 2 drew to a close included six horses for a cumulated €656,000.

Bred by Jean-Pierre Dubois, the filly is a half-sister to this year L. Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles runner-up RED LINE, from the distant family of LOVE DE VEGA and LADY FRANKEL.

This is a lovely Dubois family, commented Pimbonnet, and my client fell in love with the filly when he saw her this morning. He told me: "Should I go crazy on one today, it will be this one"! There is a lot of precocity on both sides of the pedigree and I am looking forward to training her.

LOT 297

She is a healthy filly with a good walk and good hind quarters, commented Gourraud. The family has produced some good milers. She is for a new syndicate comprising several of my clients.

Young trainer Fey stocks up with €75K Oasis Dream colt

German-born Carina Fey was forced to relinquish a career in the saddle following a severe accident in 2011 and two year ago she put the bad memories firmly behind her when deciding the start up as a trainer in Chantilly. From a small string, the 29-year-old quickly made her mark under both codes. An early highlight was HELLO MY LOVE's second place in the Gr.2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein while three weeks ago, Eckhard Sauren's IZZO who won the Gr.3 Prix de Maisons-Laffitte at Auteuil.

The winning owner-trainer partnership will be renewed around a well-bred son of Oasis Dream (lot 265) for which Fey paid €75,000. Offered by Coulonces Sales, he is the second foal out of the winning mare LOUVE NATIONALE, who is herself a half-sister to no less than six black type performers headed by Gr.2 scorer and sire LOUP BRETON.

I hadn't yet spent that much on a yearling, she exclaimed. This colt has great charisma, walks well and obviously hails from a wonderful family. For me he really had everything.

LOT 230
Vidal starts day 2 with a bang

Sylvain Vidal, who manages Gérard Augustin-Normand's stud farm and bloodstock interests, took no time to celebrate the victory of two-year-old colt CRISTOT in the second race at Deauville racecourse as he was already busy building up the stable's next generation. The second day of the October Yearling Sale hadn't been underway for a quarter of an hour when he signed the docket at €75,000 for a filly by Le Havre (lot 230) from the draft of Coulonces Sales. She is out of the winning Dansili mare Influence, herself a daughter of the French champion juvenile Moiava.

Just minutes later, the man at the helm of Haras de Montfort et Préaux was back with the €90,000 purchase of another resident stallion in Rajsaman, offered by La Motteraye Consignment. The colt in question (lot 235) shares his grandam with dual Classic heroine AVENIR CERTAIN and traces back to the family of leading juvenile MEHMAS.

Both yearling were bred by Elisabeth Vidal in partnership with Augustin-Normand's Franklin Finance and Vidal commented:

The Le Havre filly is athletic with good limbs and bred on a cross I like. She looks more like a three-year-old. The colt is obviously by the same sire as our dual Classic winner Brametot and from a great family. Both were born and raised at home and will run for a partnership.

LOT 147
Dabirsim in unchartered territory with €500,000 filly

Simon Springer put his faith in Dabirsim since he laid his eyes on the son of Hat Trick at the 2010 August Yearling Sale and has been handsomely rewarded ever since. After winning the Gr.1 Prix Morny and Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère, which resulted in champion juvenile awards, the dark bay started his stud career in Springer's native Germany at the reasonable fee of €9,000. His  owner supported him with several of his former colour bearers and one of them, the unraced yet aptly named Amour Eternel, produced a filly which today chattered the previous record for the October Yearling Sale when knocked down to Charles Gordon-Watson for €500,000.

The filly was offered by Eric Lhermite's Haras de Grandcamp, whose association with Dabirsim dates even further back than Springer's as he consigned the colt as a yearling on behalf of breeder Michel Monfort and has stood him for the past two seasons.

Amour Eternel is a half-sister to the Listed scorer and former pacemaker to Goldikova FLASH DANCE, but it was the filly's conformation that really caught the agent's eye.

She is an exceptional individual, a big, strong, very balanced filly with a great attitude, stated Gordon-Watson, before adding the Richard Hannon would take delivery of the bay.

Fabrice Petit secures Frankel colt for €250K

Bred and offered by Haras de Saint-Pair, the sole Frankel colt in the catalogue was an early high price when selling for €250,000 to Lyon-based trainer Marc Pimbonnet on behalf of owner Fabrice Petit. The dark bay is out of the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille heroine PEARLY SHELLS, who has already foaled three black type performers led by Gr.3 winner PEARL BANKS and Stakes scorer PEARLS OF PASSION.

Pimbonnet, who started buying yearlings on behalf of Mr. Petit two years ago, explained:

My client wanted a son of Frankel and this one appealed to us. He is out of a proven mare. I wasn't expecting him to offer that price though!
